Nursing Philosophy
I believe that nursing practice is holistic in nature. It takes into consideration the multiple aspects that interplay to influence one’s response to nursing care. Nursing Theory
I think the theory of human caring by Jean Watson resonates with my philosophy in nursing. According to Watson, nursing is caring profession. The caring aspect of nursing allows the free flow of energy from the body, mind, and spirit to facilitate the recovery process. Through it, nurses find the process of caring for those in need as mutually beneficial. Watson believed that the role of the nurse is to help the patient in a position that can allow self-healing to take place. In doing this, the roles of the nurse in the process of giving their care is to promote patient health, prevent disease or illness, care for them, and restore optimal health functioning (Butts & Rich, 2018). Watson also considered the need for innovation in the provision of patient care. Accordingly, the nurse should work collaboratively with the patients in identifying their needs and the most effective ways in which they can be achieved (Sitzman & Watson, 2017). This focus extends to the use of the available technologies in health to facilitate recovery. According to Watson, the provision of nursing care also focuses on concepts that include patient, environment, health, and the nurse (McMillan & Gardner-Webb University, 2017). This focus ensures that not only the patient but also provider’s needs are also met in the provision of care.
There exist some similarities between my nursing philosophy and provisions of the nursing theory by Watson. Firstly, there is the aspect of nursing being a caring process. My worldview and Watson’s agree on the fact that the role of the nurse is to care for the patient. There is also the aspect of innovation. Watson identified the need for innovation in the provision of care. I also believe that scientific innovations are important in promoting the health and wellbeing of the patients. The last similarity between my philosophy and Watson’s is the focus on the concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing (Finkelman, 2018). I believe that the most important aspect of care is considering these concepts in the process of providing nursing care to patients.
The theory of nursing by Watson reinforces my approach to care by ensuring that I focus on the unique needs of the patient and not generalizing to the wider patient population. An example of a situation where my worldview and Watson’s theory might prove important is when addressing the occurrence of Corona virus in my setting. Corona virus is a new disease that was recently discovered in China. Its effective management relies mainly on ensuring that the prioritized needs of the patient are met during the caring process and the utilization of innovative technologies in healthcare to prevent its spread. Therefore, this example shows the combined use of my belief in science and caring in the theory of human caring by Watson.

Worldview and Nursing Process Personal Statement
Nurses have an important role in provision of care that promotes safety, quality and efficiency. As they do so, they practice in relation to their worldview which entails the set of assumptions and beliefs that impact their nursing practice (Kim, 2020). Worldview represents the way in which nurses interpret and explain their experience influenced by factors like culture. Worldview offers nurses with an ontological and epistemic basis that determines their belief system (McMillan, 2017). As such, this essay examines my personal worldview, a nursing theory that aligns with my philosophy and an explanation based on an example where the model would assist in handling the issue. In its final part, the paper examines the way in which the worldview will help me in developing my future practice as a nurse.
Worldview and Nursing Philosophy
My worldview is influenced by my religion which is Christianity and based on this I believe that God created all people equally and His image. Through this perspective, I must express unconditional love as a nurse to others, just as Jesus Christ did. Love is something best expressed through actions on which nursing is the most practical platform to demonstrate it through care provision to patient. I believe that nursing is a calling from God and nurses should provide holistic care to patients by taking into consideration the different aspects that interplay to impact one’s response to nursing care. These components include religious, spiritual and cultural aspects that influence the uptake of nursing care (Kim, 2020). I know that patients have different religious practices that nurses should respect and consider in their plans of care.
Nurses must also show compassion and love by incorporating these aspects as they help them deliver evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions for quality patient outcomes. For instance, where patients believe that their health issues could be solved through a combination of medical and religious approaches, a nurse has a duty to incorporate such services to enhance quality care outcomes. I perceive that religion plays a critical role in a patient’s acceptance to undertake medical treatment and nursing care interventions. Nursing is a caring process as defined by models like Nightingale’s approach and Jean Watson’s theory (Wilson et al., 2018). Nurses should understand the holistic environment and how it impacts the care outcomes of their plans. Therefore, I believe that nursing is a process that should be based on compassionate care and increased understanding of a patient’s preferences as advanced by EBP implementation.
Nursing Theory
The human caring theory by Jean Watson is the one that aligns with my nursing philosophy and perspective based on my Christian worldview. The theory advances that nurses should provide holistic care for patient by focusing on the heart of caring and positive attitude in creating a psychological balance and therapeutic interactions with patients. The model entails the preservation of human heritage in caring of individuals through development of interpersonal relationships that lead to more effective health promotion and individual and familial growth (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Through the approach, stakeholders develop a caring environment which promotes individual potential allowing patients to active participate in selecting their best actions.
At the core of the model is to ensure that nurses incorporate patient preferences and create a therapeutic relationship for long-term effective care interventions and outcomes. For instance, the caritas processes in the model aligns with the need to offer patient-centered care as they implore nurse practitioners to show the ten values like loving-kindness, authenticity and cultivation of spiritual practices as well as developing helping, trusting and mutual relationship between nurse practitioners and patients in their care settings. In practice, it implies that nurse practitioners engage their emotions in caring relationships and not remaining closed to new spiritual and emotional experiences while providing care to the patients (Panchal et al., 2021). The theory aligns with my philosophy of showing love and expressing it through actions as I provide care to patients, especially those in difficult situations. The theory implores one to establish therapeutic relationships with patients to enhance mutual understanding and confidentiality.
The model reinforces my approach to care through its primary concepts that include the carative factors, the development of interpersonal caring relationship and the caring process. The carative aspects offer certain guidelines that are at the core of caring and promoting quality care interventions (Hubert, 2018). An interpersonal relationship involves having a positive attitude concerning care and incorporation of religious and social components by healthcare providers. The caring process and moment show a love-focused interaction between nurses and patients founded on authentic sharing of their experiences that widens others’ perspectives (Elbahnasawy et al., 2017). As such, through the model and its concepts, nurses develop resilience in patient care and reinforce appropriate strategies in providing holistic care.

In an increasingly diverse, multicultural society, nurses are challenged to provide effective care to patients of all religions, races, and cultures. My personal worldviews are multidimensional, I have a strong faith in God I believe that is what guides me to be the best human first than nurse. Culture is a great influence of our behavior, believes and values and to teach how to treat people related to their ethical backgrounds. The religion in my family is predominantly Jehovah witness and their beliefs and values are so different in many facets. I am Catholic and I am raising my children as Catholics as well. Having been around the Jehovah witness religion I knew about certain things that can or cannot occur. One of the biggest factors is receiving blood. That can be huge ethical dilemma as a nurse because you want to provide the best care possible, but your personal beliefs can interfere with how your own perception can interpret how you care for the patient. “Jehovah’s Witnesses refuses all blood transfusions. Jehovah’s Witnesses and their relatives are taught by their faith that it is important for them to ‘keep Jehovah’s organization clean’. One of the ways in which they are encouraged to do so is to inform those in positions of authority about the indiscretions of others. Because family members may also speak to those in authority in the organization, it is important that each patient is asked in private what information may be passed on to relatives. If a patient elects to receive a ‘forbidden’ blood product there could be grave social implications if that decision becomes known. In such circumstances it may be necessary to make special provisions to ensure that unexpected visitors do not become aware of any treatment. Indiscreet talk between all members of hospital staff should be avoided to guarantee patient confidentiality” (EMAP 2021). Nurses have an obligation to do whatever their patient ask of them including their choices they make about their health decisions.
The worldview in nursing is essential component in healthcare. “Nursing in my worldview is a calling from God to ensure wholeness and healing of those who are sick or in pain. It is involving the responsibility of applying acquired knowledge and skills in care to relief others from pain and distress. Nursing entails taking responsibility for continuing growth in human connection, character development, and compassion.
