Portfolio is an important tool that nurses can use to show their knowledge, skills, and experience. It acts as evidence of the competencies and abilities of a professional nurse. Several ways, in which nurses can develop, their portfolio exists. One of them is the use of traditional methods such as curriculum vitae or resume. The curriculum vitae or resume is a summary of the professional qualifications of a nurse that makes them stand out of the rest in the job seeking market. It provides information such as past education, skills, and employment history to prospective employers.

Nurses can also utilize technology to come up with their e-portfolio. Electronic portfolio ensures that one’s presence and professional

abilities are available online in databases such as social media and sites for hiring of professionals. It is therefore important that nurses ensure that their electronic portfolio is carefully developed to ensure that they create a positive online identity (Green et al., 2014). A focus should be placed on ensuring that accurate information on the personal and professional goals and experiences is provided. The nurse should also ensure that the electronic portfolio highlights the unique skills and achievements that make them stand out from the other professionals.

Besides marketing their skills and experiences, nurses can also use their electronic portfolio to connect with other professionals in their field. They use it to share their innovative ideas on the manner in which the quality of the care they give can be improved. They also use the online platforms to explore innovative ways in which evidence-based practice can be promoted for quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness in healthcare (Olivio & Hanans, 2017). Therefore, as a future professional nurse, I will explore the use of resume and electronic portfolio to build my portfolio in the current healthcare environment.

Maintaining a digital identity or a digital portfolio is crucial for professionals and students. It will be utilized by several employers, academic institutions, coworkers, and even patients to search for information. It is estimated that 60 to 80 percent of employers consult online portfolios when recruiting candidates; therefore, it is crucial to maintain your digital profile. Include your academic experiences in your ePortfolio, especially if you have clinical experience that demonstrates your preparedness for the role you are seeking for (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). As a college student seeking a professional position, it is also crucial to include evidence that you have met the learning outcomes in your undergraduate program. As your work experience grows, your portfolio will become less academic and more professional (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). Employers are impressed by the existence of an ePortfolio (Leahy & Filiatrault, 2017). It is a means for professionals to highlight their distinctive qualities and skills in order to attract the attention of hiring managers. This will therefore assist businesses in learning more about the individual than a standard job application would provide (McMillan, 2014). These objectives fit with Walden University’s vision on social change, as times are constantly evolving and Walden is preparing its students for the most recent research to construct an electronic portfolio that will aid in their future success.
