ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

  • Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
  • Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
  • One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement, or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
  • I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

  • Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
  • In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
  • Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
  • Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

  • Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
  • Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
  • I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

  • I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’s level and deduct points accordingly.
  • As Masters’s level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
  • It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

LopesWrite Policy

  • For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
  • Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
  • Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
  • Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

Late Policy

  • The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
  • Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
  • If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
  • I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
  • As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

The importance of communication cannot be overstated. You can reach out to me in a variety of ways:
This is a fantastic area to ask questions about course content or assignments in the Questions to Instructor forum. If you have a question, chances are that one of your classmates does as well. This is the class’s public forum.
This is a private forum where you may ask me questions or send me messages. At least once every 24 hours, this will be checked.

To avoid client exploitation and maintain the industry’s integrity and reputation, most professionals have internal norms of practice that members of the profession must follow. This is beneficial not just to the client, but also to the people who work in that industry. Disciplinary codes allow a profession to create a code of conduct and ensure that individual practitioners follow it by disciplining them and removing them from the profession if they do not. This allows ethically conscientious professionals to practice with the assurance that individuals with less ethical concerns will not harm them financially. It also helps to keep the public’s faith in the profession, encouraging individuals to seek their help in the future.

Internal law enforcement
When professional bodies police their own ethics, there’s a risk that they’ll become self-serving and disregard their own code when dealing with rogue members. This is particularly true in professions where they have a near-total monopoly on a certain field of knowledge. Until recently, English courts, for example, deferred to professional agreement on issues that were not covered by case law or legislation. [6]

Legislative control
Professional ethical standards are governed by statute in many countries, such as the statutory authorities in England and Wales that oversee nursing and midwifery.
[7] Failure to meet these requirements may result in legal action.

Examples
A lay member of the public, for example, should not be held liable for failing to save a car accident victim because they were unable to offer proper emergency treatment, but they should be held liable for attempting to help the victim. Because they lack the essential expertise and experience, they are unable to do so. On the other hand, a properly qualified doctor with the requisite equipment would be capable of providing an accurate diagnosis and executing the necessary operations. A doctor’s failure to help at all in such a situation would be regarded negligent and unethical. However, if a doctor assists and makes a mistake that is regarded reckless and immoral, serious consequences may result. Untrained persons are only considered irresponsible if they do nothing to help, and they are protected by “Good Samaritan” laws if they inadvertently inflict extra damage and maybe death.

A corporation could hire a professional engineer to certify a potentially hazardous project’s safety. While one engineer may refuse to certify the project owing to ethical issues, the corporation may be able to find a less scrupulous engineer who will certify the project in exchange for a bribe, saving the company the cost of redesigning. [8]

Several companies have implemented whistle-blower protections, such as anonymity, in an attempt to improve their ethical reputation. Citi calls this the “Ethics Hotline,”[9] but it’s unclear whether or not firms like Citi take complaints to these hotlines seriously.

Separatism
On a theoretical level, there is debate over whether a professional’s ethical code should be in accordance with public morality standards. Separatists argue that professions should be allowed to go beyond such limits when it is judged essential. Because they are instructed to pursue specific ends that may take moral precedence over other society functions, this is the case. [10]: 282 For example, a doctor may lie to a patient about the severity of his or her sickness if there are reasonable grounds to believe that informing the patient would cause him or her such much pain that it would be damaging to their health. This would be a violation of the patient’s autonomy because knowledge that could have a substantial impact on the patient’s life would be withheld. In most circumstances, this would be considered unethical. However, if society makes improving and preserving health a moral priority, it may be appropriate to disregard other moral commitments to attain this goal. [10]: 284 Separatism is based on a relativist perspective of morality, which maintains that distinct portions of society can have multiple, equally legitimate moral codes, and that there can be differences in codes between societies. If moral universalism is true, the idea that different professions might have different moral codes is incompatible, because the universalist believes that there is only one moral code that is acceptable for everyone.
