Quantitative methods are something that can be measured therefore can be counted on with scientific credibility versus the unmeasurable as in blogs and opinions. Qualitative methods dig further by addressing the why and how, both methods use a systematic and scientific method. Blogs and opinions are just that information that is regurgitated based off of someone’s thought process NOT a scientific process. When someone says “do your own research” in healthcare that should mean gathering qualitative, quantitative, peer-reviewed, evidence-based research. Simply by saying “masks should no longer be worn because they are not good for our health, I saw this in an article” is not enough and states an observation from an unknown source. The advanced registered nurse should not just say I’m going to research this but do their due diligence by utilizing that research mentioned to formulate a well-researched and thought out response. When a new process is introduced this writer finds that I ask often where is the research to support this change? What evidence do you have for us in order to follow-up on that research. This has most recently impacted our department as new leaders have decided to change the model of care. The first questions I asked is what I mentioned above in order to dig further into what is being asked of us, understand how the model change can help our department, gain knowledge to the process and so on.

As advanced registered nursing implement practice change, it is crucial that research with qualitative and quantitative data is used. Anytime there is a practice change or new technology APRN’s should be benchmarking and identifying best practices through validated information. APRNs can determine the strength of information by following Evidenced Based practice procedures and evaluating the evidence. The AACN has published a tool to evaluate the quality and strength of information (DeNisco, 2021, p 575). When comparing the level of evidence of quantitative research versus opinions, it shows that using quality and quantitative research provides more validity to the information and practice than expert opinion. Thus, when searching for information to support best practices, APRN’s should seek the highest level of evidence that can be identified when looking for information on best practices and implementation strategies.

Communication technology is now allowing us to respond to one another in real time. When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred communication was key to helping to spread information about the virus. How it spread and the effects on his body. It was key to helping hospitals coordinate with one another especially as places like New York City became hard hit and hospital systems collapsed. Communication in real time help other areas and other hospitals learn what was being done well and what wasn’t being done well for them to incorporate mechanisms to help keep the hospitals afloat and from collapsing. The technologies that we are using today such as cell phones and e-mail have allowed physicians and other health care workers to communicate rapidly versus what we were using decades ago such as beepers or pagers calling via landlines or fax machines. The technology today allows us to communicate even with the public via social media to help educate the population on what’s going on in regards to public health matters and ways for people to protect themselves. “having more access to more interactive technologies, patient-provider communication no longer has to be face-to-face. Instead, in some situations a patient no longer has to be physically present in a physician or a nurse’s office to get information or treatment” (Tian, 2021). COVID-19 pandemic help give rise to telemedicine a former technology that allows patients to communicate with doctors and other healthcare professionals online instead of in person. Nowhere was this more valuable than in the mental health sector where patient seeking mental health services were able to connect with mental health specialists this also allowed mental health specialists to see in number of patients in this certain time frame versus when they had to see them in person allowing them to reach more people and people in different areas of the country.

Communication systems in healthcare include secure messaging, mobile phones, video conferencing, telehealth, secure apps, email, and secure fax. It involves relaying and sharing information between health professionals as well as patients. The use of these communication technologies can impact the way nurses assess, formulate care plans, provide care, document care provided and even clinical decision making (Rouleau et al., 2017). The use of communication technology enhances the collaboration and coordination of the interprofessional team since there are now multiple, secure ways to relay health information to other related providers.

High-quality interprofessional communication helps reduce errors and improves quality care and patient outcomes (Bardach et al., 2017). Most, if not all healthcare providers in the US have now transitioned to the use of electronic health records system so there have been various technology development to enhance the communication technology within the electronic healthcare record system which will make it easier for providers to securely relay health information which can be tracked and maintained within the system. In the current electronic health record system that we use in our organization, my favorite feature is being able to send secure messages to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members and instantly get responses. And for providers that are not using the same electronic health care system, I like the health information exchange system that we have which allows us to access the health records of our common patients. It eliminates the need to pick up the phone and be placed on hold for a long time just to get in touch with our other providers.

Open and clear communication between an interdisciplinary team is crucial for providing safe and quality patient care. Communication technology can improve communication by providing increased access to the team in a timely manner. When using technology for communication it is important to consider all aspects of the tool. The tool should promote care coordination, protect patient privacy, and support safe process of care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018, p. 40). If the communication tool meets these expectations, it will help the team improve communication and provide timely care to patients within all healthcare settings.

           Currently, I work in an intensive care unit where frequently we need to communicate between multiple team members including critical care team, pharmacy, nursing, PT/OT, social work, care management, consulting services, and nutrition. A tool that we use within the electronic medical record is called secure chat. Team members can sign into the care team for each patient and provide contact information and the ability to send a secure message to individual members, or all members of the care team.  This tool provides a way for care team members to communicate the care plan and provide relevant information and updates in real-time. It also provides a way to reference information that occurs that shift. Our care team frequently utilizes the secure chat function for non-emergent communication that helps provide the best care to patients.

Effective communication across disciplines is imperative to the care of patients. In case management for example having an up-to-date chart because we rely heavily on the information that is presented in the chart. Are they going home on oxygen? What are their current needs, what was their walking room air, were they using this prior to admission, where do they live. It seems simple enough but if there is no room air the DME company cannot justify the need and in order to get reimbursed for services. In times like this having AI, computer on wheels, cell phones, secure chat or Vocera helps to cut the gap on what is documented, what is occurring with the nurse’s caseload and the needs of the team. Having communication technologies are tools that help to get the information that is needed quickly. In my current facility Vocera is often used between the interdisciplinary team as well as a mode to call outside lines if needed. Vocera is a technology that also needs to be improved, for instance the only mode to hear is on speaker mode where PHI may be overheard. Wooden & Blair (2019) report that technology is an effective tool to enhance communication between teams and results indicate that with the use these tools there is decreased length of stays, improved patient outcomes and improved nursing care.
