ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement, or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’s level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’s level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Most professionals have internal rules of practice that members of the profession must adhere to in order to avoid customer exploitation and maintain the profession’s integrity and reputation. This is not only for the client’s benefit, but also for the benefit of people who work in that field. Disciplinary codes enable a profession to establish a code of conduct and ensure that individual practitioners adhere to it by disciplining them from the professional organization if they fail to do so. This allows ethically conscious professionals to practice in the certainty that they will not be monetarily harmed by those who have less ethical concerns. It also maintains public faith in the profession, encouraging people to seek their services in the future.
Internal policing
When professional bodies police their own ethics, there is a risk that they will become self-serving and ignore their own ethical code when dealing with renegade members. This is especially true in professions where they have a near-complete monopoly on a specific field of knowledge. Until recently, English courts, for example, deferred to professional agreement on questions relevant to their practice that were not covered by case law or legislation. [6]
Legislative regulation
In many countries, professional ethical standards are regulated by statute, such as the statutory authorities that oversee nursing and midwifery in England and Wales.
[7] Failure to comply with these criteria may thus result in legal action.
Examples
For example, a lay member of the public should not be held liable for failing to act to save a car accident victim because they were unable to provide adequate emergency treatment, but they should be held liable for attempting to assist the victim. They are unable to do so because they lack the necessary expertise and experience. A fully trained doctor, on the other hand, with the required equipment, would be capable of making the accurate diagnosis and performing the necessary operations. In such a case, a doctor’s failure to aid at all would be considered irresponsible and unethical. However, if a doctor assists and makes a mistake that is deemed irresponsible and immoral, there may be severe consequences. Untrained people are only judged irresponsible for neglecting to intervene if they do nothing to aid, and they are protected by “Good Samaritan” rules if they accidentally cause additional damage and maybe loss of life.
A company may hire a professional engineer to certify the safety of a potentially dangerous project. While one engineer may refuse to certify the project due to moral concerns, the business may be able to find a less scrupulous engineer willing to certify the project in exchange for a bribe, saving the company the cost of redesigning. Whistle-blower protections, such as anonymity, have been created by several firms in an attempt to improve their ethical image. Citi refers to this as the “Ethics Hotline,”[9] while it is unclear if companies like Citi take complaints to these hotlines seriously or not.
Separatism
On a theoretical level, there is disagreement about whether a professional’s ethical code should be consistent with public morality norms. Separatists contend that when deemed necessary, professions should be permitted to go beyond such restrictions. This is due to the fact that they are taught to achieve specific outcomes that may take moral precedence over other societal functions. [10]: 282 It may be claimed, for example, that a doctor may lie to a patient about the severity of his or her disease if there is grounds to believe that notifying the patient would cause him or her such much distress that it would be harmful to their health. This would constitute a violation of the patient’s autonomy, as it would withhold knowledge that could have a significant influence on the patient’s life. This would be considered unethical in most cases. However, if society makes the aim of improving and preserving health a moral priority, it may be justified to ignore other moral obligations in order to achieve this goal. [10]: 284 Separatism is founded on a relativist view of morality, which holds that multiple, equally legitimate moral codes can apply to different parts of society and that there can be disparities in codes between societies. If moral universalism is believed, it is incompatible with the idea that different professions can have diverse moral codes, because the universalist believes that there is only one acceptable moral code for everyone.
