Discussion Questions (DQ)

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’s level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’s level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Clostridium difficile is a common opportunistic infection that can cause mild to severe colitis, especially in the elderly and those using antibiotics. 1,2 The worldwide appearance of strains (e.g., ribotypes 027, 078) with genomic changes resulting in high-level fluoroquinolone resistance and probable increases in virulence capability is partly to blame for the rise in C. difficile-associated morbidity. 2,3 According to one study, C. difficile fluoroquinolone resistance contributes to more severe inflammation. 4 Antibiotics are still the most cost-effective treatment choice for C. difficile infection, but they have been linked to a higher likelihood of recurrence. 1
Over the last few years, the use of probiotic microbes to treat a variety of GI illnesses has increased. Several randomized control trials have been described in this vein, with the goal of avoiding AAD (and C. difficle) with the administration of probiotics. Probiotic organisms have been shown to be effective in the prevention of AAD and CDI in several trials. 5,6 The use of probiotic preparations resulted in a 20% reduction in the incidence of AAD and C. difficile in at least two of the investigations. 6,7 To present, the majority of AAD-related clinical investigations have used Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacteria spp., or Sacchromyces boulardii to treat patients. Only one investigation found Streptococcus thermophilus, a possibly probiotic bacteria, in a commercial yogurt drink. 7 1010 viable organisms is the most common dose utilized in probiotic investigations. This dose is most likely derived from lactobacilli and S. thermophilus concentrations of 108 cfu/mL in fermented dairy products (such as yogurt).
