Drug abuse is a significant public health concern in the US that is associated with various adverse effects. In particular, opioid misuse, overdose, and abuse continue to cause massive mortality and morbidity, creating damages to patients, families, and communities. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (2020), opioid overdose killed nearly 50,000 people in 2019. The addiction and misuse to opioids such as heroin, prescription pain relievers, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl is ravaging public health and also economic and social wellbeing. Moreover, economic burden of misusing opioid prescription is nearly $78.5 billion a year, alongside the cost of addiction treatment, lost productivity, criminal involvement, and health care (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020).

The administration of President Trump addressed opioids crisis as a matter of public emergency. The Trump administration used a multimodal approach to address opioid crisis. The initial step included curbing of over prescription of opioid and minimization of demands through public awareness on risks of using opioids. The next step was to limit opioid supply by breaking off both domestic and global supply chains. The other approach involved was to help the addicted users in the treatment and recovery process.
